College of Arts at Tunghai University Guides Incoming Freshmen to Contemplate from the Heart

One of the main focuses of implementation of Xplorer Project at Tunghai University is to provide transition support for incoming freshmen. Tunghai University planed a series of freshmen transition activities from September 5th to 7th for the second batch of freshmen following the current 12-Year Basic Education curriculum guideline (new curriculum) to unveil the splendid prologue of their university life. These events not only allow incoming freshmen to familiarize with resources at Tunghai University but also provide all students with guidance on their ideal university life. The hope is that during their four years at Tunghai University, they will not forget dreams they had when they first entered and be proactive and plan their splendid university life.

On the first day, we initiated the new freshmen into their university journey with "Mandala Painting," encouraging a calm and introspective approach to embrace their upcoming university life. As the incoming freshmen produced colorful and captivating artworks through transformation and layering of shapes and colors, they also experienced tranquility and felt the power of visual images through this process.

On the second day, the professors from the College of Arts introduced the Mandala Chart and encouraged incoming freshmen to incorporate this tool in their future university learning and life and use it to improve their associative thinking and creativity. The activity involved collaborative Jamboard session in small groups, each group is was led by upperclassmen from various departments within College of Arts. The process allows incoming freshmen to feel the power of teamwork. Divide and conquer allowed them to quickly find resources from university administrative unit, courses offered by College of Arts, courses offered by other colleges, etc. Guidance from upperclassmen also helped incoming freshmen to swiftly grasp an understanding of university resources. The first two days of activities foreshadows the activities for the third day, prompting students to begin contemplating how to be truly happy throughout their four years in university.

The activity for the third day is “Joyful Brushwork”. Professors guide students to draw their “happiness Polaris”, to start contemplating about their four years university life, and set expectations for themselves. This will serve as a reminder for students from the College of Arts for the next four years. The artwork not only have commemorative significance, but also serve as a reminder for themselves to not forget their original intention.

During the three consecutive days of freshmen transition activities for incoming freshmen from the College of Arts many professors including by the Dean of College of Arts, Wen-Hui Chou, Professor from Department of Chinese Literature, Jia-lian Li, and Professor of Department of Foreign Language and Literature, Mei-Hui Liu warmly welcomed the incoming freshmen. The Dean of College of Arts expressed her amazement for the incoming freshmen, at their ability to immerse in tranquility during the mandala painting, actively engage in interaction with upperclassmen and professors, and confidently share their ideas and prospective during discussion. Many freshmen also expressed great enthusiasm for their field of study. It is hoped that these freshmen from the College of Arts will retain the essence of these three days of translation activities, utilize the resources provided by the university effectively, engage in meaningful discussions with their professors, and let Tunghai University become the cornerstone of their accomplishments.
