Canva is an excellent tool, notable for its abundant design elements and templates. People can learn how to design presentations by referencing, emulating and customizing templates. In addition, Canva offers automated gridlines to help aligning, balancing and whitespace for design layout.
Limit the color plate to no more than 3 colors. Use one as the base color, and other as sub colors
When a slide incorporates both text and pictures or substantial amount of text, utilize geometric shapes & color blocks for segmentation creating cleaner and more comprehensible layout
Text of the same weight (heading, subheading, body text and annotations) should use the same font size. Emphasis important information using bold or colors, and maintain uniform font choices within the same layout.
If there are substantial texts, try to visualize it. Employ flowchart, minimal, or Gantt chart for effective communication.
Familiarity with presentation software varies, some prefer PowerPoint, Ps. At, Canva, etc. Start learning with the software you’re most comfortable with, no need to use unfamiliar softwares because it might be more time consuming.
During my summer internship, I needed to create a substantial amount of presentations online for dummies guides and in person presentations with consistency. For this reason, I consulted with design experts and created a for dummies guide. Although it was time consuming, the final product was effective in communicating to both passers-by or when presenting on stage. The dummies guide can also be adapted to various types of presentation for different occasions.
In both academic or workplace presentations, bad design can impede communication, and leaves a negative impression. Good design will help effectively communicate, and enhance your presentation on stage. For this reason, it is essential to keep learning about presentation design.
