On September 1st, the Ministry of Education hosts an interuniversity learning event at the National Tsing Hua University with the theme of “Countdown to the Start of School: The Most Important Little Things in the Eyes of Students”. The event brings together the eleven universities that are subsidized by the Ministry of Education to implement the XPlorer Project, A University Competency-Based Education Initiative in the Humanities and Social Sciences for New Normal Society, along with experts and scholars to exchange experiences from implementing the project.
The event starts with three questions: “What is the focal point of learning guide before and after the start of school?”, “How to design homework to effectively promote self-directed learning for students?”, and “How do peer coaching, in-class and out-of-class learning communities operate?” The event concludes with a summary of "Ten Things Schools Must Do Before and After the Start of the School Year".
Tunghai University is also invited by the XPlorer Project Office to share “What is the focal point of learning guide before and after the start of school?”. Wang-Chung Ming, the dean of Po-Ya School at Tunghai University, represents Tunghai University to share how the university guides incoming freshmen to regain subjectivity of learning, which is highly recognized by other participants. Other universities, such as Tamkang University, Fu Jen Catholic University and four others, are also trying different ways to implement concepts such as competency-based, new norms, sustainability into courses, and extend teaching sites beyond the campus and to nearby communities.
The XPloer Project Co-Director, Shin-Yin Peng, responds with the theme of the event with a speech on how to reduce students’ doubts about “whether or not I belong to this university?”, and increase their sense of belonging to their current university. Looking forward to the implementation of the XPlorer Project, universities will actively guide students to explore learning paths and contexts, and build support systems for the transition from high school to university.
