It is currently a semester since universities welcomed the arrival of freshmen following the current 12-Year Basic Education curriculum guideline (new curriculum). This also means that the XPlorer Project, a university competency-based education initiative in the humanities and social science for the new normal society, has been implemented for more than half a year. How are the eleven universities applying innovative teaching and connecting the new curriculum guideline, new normal, and technologies? How are the professors teaching? How are the students learning? These are all topics that the XPlorer Project continues to explore and focus on.
The Vice President of Tunghai University, Liu Jeng, expresses the university's aim to increase the willingness for self-directed learning by offering incoming freshmen "University Dialogue", a micro-credit course accompanied by "freshmen orientation" that allows students to familiarize themselves with the resources offered by the university. After a semester of hard work from professors participating in the project, there are currently sixteen competency-based courses yielding positive results, including the "Learning Contract", which emphasizes self-directed learning, and "Environmental Changes and Low-Carbon Life", which encourages interdisciplinary learning. Additionally, the executive council at Tunghai University has approved "student core competency", and professors can select the competencies the course will teach the student on the system.
There is a committee offering feedback on the implementation of the XPlorer Project at Tunghai University. The committee consists of the President of National Chengchi University, Tsai-Yen Li, Distinguished Professor at National Chengchi University, Jin-Hsuan Lin, Professor at National Taipei University, Wan-Chi Chen, Associate Professor at National Central University, Ming-Fong Jan, and Professor at National Central University, Li-Jung Wang. The committee offers feedback and implementation advice on aspects such as learning goals, course recommendations, competency-directed evaluation, and ways to eliminate passive learning.
